Jojo Brawl

A brawl game based on the anime JoJo's Bizarre Adventures, featuring characters from the anime unique combat abilities and skills. This was one of my earliest and biggest projects, initially working as UI/UX, SFX, and GFX designer before taking on project management.

Year

Status
cancelled

The project began as a game request from the content creator CraftingVegeto and grew into a large collaboration, with several developers and artists bringing the JoJo universe to Roblox. I joined as the UI/UX, SFX and GFX designer, and later took over as project manager.

SFX Design

Sound effects and music

I created the sound effects and music for every character from parts 1 to 3: fighting music, lobby music, character-specific audio and the non-combat sounds that brought the JoJo universe to life.

  • Music

Original fighting music for combat, atmospheric lobby music for character selection, and intermission music between matches.
  • Sound effects

Character-specific audio cues and voices, interface and interaction sounds, and environmental and ambient audio.
  • Main Theme - Vento Quiete

    0:00 / 0:00

The main OST of the game

  • Lobby Music

    0:00 / 0:00

The lobby music, a chill relaxing music with a mix of guitar and piano played in the lobby

UI/UX Design

Interfaces

I designed the key interfaces, including the character selection screen and the player interface, intuitive and true to the series.

  • Character selection

An interactive character grid with a preview and stats for each character, organized by part.
  • Player interface

Health and ability displays and a combat HUD, with JoJo-themed styling.
  • Character Selection Interface
  • Enemy Overhead Indicator
  • Enemy Lock-on Icon
  • Characters Portraits from part 1

GFX

Logo and thumbnail

I designed the game's logo and one of its cover thumbnails, graphics that capture the spirit of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

  • Game logo

JoJo-style typography with Stand-inspired details: the Arrow and Giorno's pin.
  • Cover thumbnail

A chill anime-style cover with a dynamic composition: Jotaro against Dio.
  • Game Logo
  • Dark Theme Game Logo
  • Game Thumbnail
  • Game Thumbnail 2
Project management

When the project began to struggle, I took on the role of project manager, coordinating several developers and artists to bring the vision to life. My work as manager pushed the project a long way forward, but it was eventually cancelled for lack of funding.

  • Team coordination

Managing several developers, coordinating the different roles and overseeing quality.
  • Progress

Several maps finished, VFX systems built and advanced GFX assets created.
Project status

Despite strong progress and a solid foundation, Jojo Brawl was cancelled for lack of funding. It had reached an advanced stage, with several developers contributing assets and systems.

  • Where it got to

Interface systems complete, sound effects for the characters of parts 1 to 3, the logo and cover thumbnails, and several maps and VFX in progress.
  • Why it stopped

Not enough funding to continue, no additional investment, and development costs beyond the available budget.
Key features
  • Combat

Character-specific abilities, unique combat mechanics, Stand-based combat and multiplayer brawls.
  • Roster

Characters from parts 1 to 5, each with a portrait, their own stats and Stand abilities.
  • Visual design

A JoJo-themed interface, the character selection screen, the logo and thumbnails, and Stand Arrow details.
What I learned

Jojo Brawl was one of my biggest projects, and a lesson in project management, team coordination and game development across disciplines. Starting as a designer and becoming the project manager taught me how complex it is to lead a creative team.

  • Project management

Team coordination and leadership, timeline management, quality assurance, and resource allocation and budgeting.
  • Creative work

Design across disciplines, character-specific audio, interfaces for complex game systems, and brand identity and visual design.
The same team, next

The team behind Jojo Brawl went on to make Kart Warriors, an anime kart racer where I designed the sound effects too. Both games show how the team builds anime-themed experiences on Roblox.
